The country has a temperate seasonal climate. The current president of Latvia is Andris Berzins.

Latvia is a democratic parliamentary republic established in 1918. The capital city is Riga, the European Capital of Culture 2014. Latvian is the official language. Latvia is a unitary state, divided into 118 administrative divisions, of which 109 are municipalities and 9 are cities. Latvia’s GDP is $42,471 billion (PPP) with per capita of $20,291 in 2014. Latvia’s GDP in the agriculture sector is 4.4%, industry 26.3%, services 69.3% according to the 2012 estimate

Latvia is a member of NATO, European Union, United Nations, Council of Europe, CBSS, IMF, NB8, NIB, OSCE, and WTO. It is currently in the accession process for joining the OECD. For 2013, Latvia is listed 48th on the Human Development Index and as a high income country until 1 July 2014.It used the Latvian lats as its currency until this was replaced by the euro on 1 January 2014.

Latvia exports food products, wood and wood products, metals, machinery and equipment, textiles. Some of its export partners are Lithuania, Russia, Estonia, Germany, Poland, and Sweden.

Latvia also imports the following: machinery and equipment, consumer goods, chemical, fuels, vehicles. And its import partners are Lithuania, Germany, Poland,Estonia, Russia, Finland,and Italy.
