Its mainland is bordered to the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea; to the north and northeast by France, Andorra, and the Bay of Biscay; and to the west and northwest by Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean.

Spain’s 1,214 km (754 mi) border with Portugal is the longest uninterrupted border within the European Union. With an area of 505,990 km2 (195,360 sq mi), Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe and the European Union, and the fourth largest country in Europe. By population, Spain is the sixth largest in Europe and the fifth in the European Union.

Spain lies between latitudes 26° and 44° N, and longitudes 19° W and 5° E.
Spain is a member of the EU, WTO and OECD.
Spain’s GDP in 2014 estimate was $1,393 trillion with PPP of  $1.566 trillion.

The climate of Spain, its geographic location, popular coastlines, diverse landscapes, historical legacy, vibrant culture and excellent infrastructure, has made Spain’s international tourist industry among the largest in the world. In the last five decades, international tourism in Spain has grown to become the second largest in the world in terms of spending, worth approximately 49 billion Euros or about 10,9% of GDP in 2014.

Spain is one of the Europe’s largest markets with 48 million consumers who add to 65 million tourists who visited the country in 2014.

Spanish companies are among the world’s leaders in sectors of high added value and major growth potential such as infrastructure management, the electricity sector, renewable energies, logistics, oil refining, high-speed railways, the financial sector, security, automotive sector, biotechnology, environmental technologies, water treatment, aerospace, naval technology, information and communication technologies, health technology, e-health and electronic administration.

Ferrovial, a Spanish company runs Europe’s busiest airport, Heatrow. Spanish societies build and run many subway lines in the world’s great cities: New York, Mexico, Panama, Miami, Rome…INDITEX, THE parent company of ZARA, Massimo Dutti, Pull& Bear is the largest corporation in the world’s textile sector, with over 6.000 shops spread over the five continents, is Spanish. INDRA’s Spanish technology manages 100% of German air space as well as 60% of Chinese skies. ISOLUX is one of the world’s leading operators in electricity transmission with 10.000 kilometers of lines. ELECNOR is also prominent in the sector.

Spain is one of world’s leading countries in the development and production of renewable energy. In 2010 Spain became the solar power world leader when it overtook the United States with a massive power station plant called La Florida, near Alvarado, Badajoz. Spain is also Europe’s main producer of wind energy.
